Total Hip Replacement

Total Hip Replacement (THR), also known as Total Hip Arthroplasty, is a surgical intervention where a damaged or diseased hip joint is replaced with an artificial joint or prosthesis. This procedure is highly effective for relieving pain and restoring mobility in patients with severe hip joint issues, often resulting from conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteonecrosis, or traumatic injuries.

THR is typically recommended for individuals experiencing persistent hip pain and mobility limitations that significantly impact their quality of life. These symptoms are usually due to degenerative joint diseases or severe hip injuries that have not responded to conservative treatments, including medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle modifications.

The surgery involves removing the damaged femoral head (the upper end of the thigh bone) and the acetabulum (the hip socket). These components are then replaced with artificial parts: a metal or ceramic ball on a stem inserted into the femur and a metal socket with a plastic, ceramic, or metal liner. These prosthetic components are designed to replicate the hip joint’s natural movement.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Post-operative recovery includes a short hospital stay, followed by physical therapy to aid in regaining strength and mobility. Patients are encouraged to engage in walking and light activities soon after surgery, gradually increasing their activity level under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Full recovery and return to normal activities can vary, typically ranging from a few months to a year.

THR has a high success rate, offering significant improvements in pain relief and joint function. While artificial hip joints can wear out or loosen over time, modern materials and surgical techniques have extended their lifespan, with many lasting 20 years or more.

Total Hip Replacement is a transformative procedure for those suffering from debilitating hip pain, providing an opportunity for a more active and comfortable life.
